Vodpod videos no longer available.

If you’re thinking of scaling Mt. Everest or even the heights of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Goal Zero Sherpa charging kit on display at the Consumer Electronics Show could come in handy for keeping in touch with base camp.

It’s a portable power plant utilizing battery and solar technology that charges your cellphone or GPS device while you’re on the mountain.

The 2.2-pound Sherpa 50 kit charges fully in about eight hours of good sunlight or 2.5 hours from the wall. It offers about 54 hours of power for an average cellphone and more than 190 hours for an iPod.

The Sherpa 50 has a universal inverter, a 12-volt outlet and a USB port. It retails for $449.95.
